Castilian Roses (Our Lady of Guadalupe) Blanket

When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego, she didn't make just any rose grow on a hill in the middle of winter. Oh no, that might have been too easy for the Queen of Heaven.

Instead of your average, garden variety rose, Our Lady made Castilian roses bloom on Tepeyac Hill. It was Castilian roses that Our Lady arranged in Juan Diego's tilma before he presented himself to the bishop.

Castilian roses are not native to Mexico. In fact, they aren't even native to North or South America! Castilian roses grow in only Europe. However, the bishop of Mexico City at the time reportedly had a favorite rose - none other than the Castilian rose - which he hadn't seen in years. Mary knew this, which is exactly why she caused these roses, also known as Damask roses, to grow on Tepeyac Hill, even in the middle of winter.

This blanket features a light beige background, a subtle reminder of Juan Diego's tilma on which Our Lady arranged her roses. Then, covering the blanket, are bright red Castilian roses of various sizes. Woven among the roses are the words, "Am I not here who am your mother?" written in both English and Spanish.
