This week’s prompt: What are your thought’s about Valentine’s day? Do you enjoy it? Loathe it? Not even realize it’s a special day? Do you celebrate it in anyway?
Most people would say that I’m one of those “rare girls” who could care less about Valentine’s Day. Yes, I notice it is a day on the calendar, but I also know that it is no longer on the Roman calendar for the feast of St. Valentine. It is, however, the feast day of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Sparing you my rant on how all good holidays have been stolen from the Catholic Church, suffice it to say that Valentine’s Day isn’t one I get all worked up over.
I don’t necessarily enjoy it, but I don’t loathe it either. Rather than seeing it as a day to get particularly annoyed at all of the giant stuffed animals and cutesy things, I see it as a day to talk to people about what love really is and where Love comes from. I dislike the fact that stores are covered in pink and that guys stress over the perfect date, but I love the opportunity to really talk about love, what it means, why we care, and how to love and be loved.
Honestly, I’m not super fond of the day. I’ve been broken up with twice on Valentine’s Day and have more less-than-fond memories of it than I do fond ones. Sure, this year was wonderful getting to share it with my soon-to-be husband, but so is every other day. I think that is what gets me the most, the push that for some reason Valentine’s Day is the only day of the year to really spoil your beloved. It is as if you could forget about them, treat them as hum-drum and then go all out for Valentine’s Day and everything would be fine. Real love, folks, is cultivated in the day-to-day moments of our lives.
Also, as a closing thought, women don’t need much for Valentine’s Day except for a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. We may want more, but we don’t need more. What we certainly do not need for Valentine’s Day is an abortion. I’m looking at you Cecile Richards.
