my marital Status.

A few years ago I changed my Facebook status to something to the effect of: “I realized that I am not single. In fact, never once in my entire life have I been single. I have always been, and will always be, in a relationship.” It is true, just as much for me as it is for you.

Sometimes in my life I’ve lied about this relationship. I’ve denied it. Sometimes I’ve embraced it, more often than not I’ve even bragged about it. I am not single. I am in a relationship, a deep, lasting, passionate, loving, forgiving relationship.

I hate filling out forms when they ask your marital status. I hate when people ask me if I’m single. In some way it implies that I am alone, that no one loves me or is willing to risk entering a relationship with me. Neither of those, of course, are true. I am not alone. There is One who is so willing to enter into a relationship with me that He literally died for me. I am not single. Am I currently, at this very moment, in a committed romantic relationship with a fully embodied human being who is not also fully divine? Not necessarily. But that doesn’t make me single, nor does it make me alone.

The truth is that we are all in a relationship with Him. Our relationship with Him should always be our primary relationship (I’ve written before about what happens when it isn’t our primary relationship). My marital status isn’t complicated either. It really is quite simple: I’m passionately and madly in love with the God who created me. I live to serve Him and to please Him. He blesses me in more ways each and every day than I could possibly ever deserve. He fills my life with beauty and goodness. He fills my life with Himself. So, if you ask me if I’m single I will more than likely tell you no. One, because it is, at least at the moment I’m writing this, the honest truth, and two, to mess with you just a little bit 😉 Ask me and I’ll gladly tell you about the love of my life, the One who has always (and will always) be in relationship with me, no matter how many times I’ve turned my back on Him. The greatest part about the Man I’m in a relationship with? You can be in a relationship with Him too, and it isn’t cheating! He’s got a big heart, it is one of the countless things I love most about Him =)
