Our Lady of the Snows Blanket

Who says you have to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas? With the Our Lady of the Snows blanket, you can bring it out in August and still be liturgically correct!

The feast of Our Lady of the Snows comes from the major basilica in Rome, St. Mary Major, also known as Santa Maria Maggiore. The tale goes that there was a wealthy couple who had no children. They wanted to give their wealth to honor Our Lady and prayed, asking her to show them what to do. 

In a vision, Our Lady told the couple that there would be snow on a hill - in August, the heat of the summer! - and that was where they were to build the church. On August 5th snow fell on Esquiline Hill, evidently in the outline of what would become the basilica.

Each year in the chapel dedicated to Our Lady inside Saint Mary Major white rose petals are released from the ceiling on August 5th, in commemoration of the miraculous snowfall.

This blanket, which is available in two sizes (50''x60'' and 60''x80''), features a dark green background with subtle hints of grass - a reminder of the green grass that the snow fell on in August in the year 352. Spread across the blanket are glittery snowflakes and white rose petals. In between the snowflakes are the the words, "Our Lady of the Snows" and "Santca Maria ad Nives" (which is Latin for Our Lady of the Snow).

Each August 5th you can pull your Our Lady of the Snows blanket out and be liturgically correct, all while hoping and praying for snowy weather! You never know where Our Lady may make snow appear next!
