draw me a Map.
Once upon a time, I used to write blogs about songs that weren't necessarily overtly or explicitly Christian and find Christian themes or messages in them. When I was a youth minister I always enjoyed having a night where we listened to seemingly secular songs and tried to find God in the lyrics. Ironically enough, I mostly gave up secular music for Lent. Not a hard and fast rule, but I generally choose to listen to Christian-themed music for the time being...until one day I had a song stuck in my head and it just wouldn't quit. Listening to the nudging of the Spirit (or my own desire?), I turned the song on and was surprised by what I found. That song is "Draw Me A Map" by Dierks Bentley, one of my favorite country artists.
Draw Me A Map
Dierks Bentley
Staring deep into your eyes Searching for answers to questions I can't find If I took for granted that I held your heart I'd beg forgiveness but I don't know where to start
So, draw me a map that leads me back to you I don't know where to go, please tell me what to do Help me find the road you're on I just need directions home Draw me a map that leads me back to you
I've never been so at a loss I'm at a canyon I can't get around or cross So baby come down here, lay by my side And tell me love's not lost across the great divide
Draw me a map that leads me back to you I don't know where to go, please tell me what to do Help me find the road you're on I just need directions home Draw me a map that leads me back to you
You're my destiny and destination Understand my desperation, you The only place I wanna be So get us back to you and me
Draw me a map that leads me back to you I don't know where to go, please tell me what to do Help me find the road you're on I just need directions home Draw me a map that leads me back to you
Even re-reading the lyrics now, I'm moved by the depth of the song. As I took it to prayer (even drawing out part of the song - see my Instagram feed @youareworthyofagape), I tried to take in each line of the song. Below, I break apart the song verse by verse as it could (or does) relate to God; my thoughts/prayers are bolded.

I do hold Your heart, You have given it to me freely, time and time again, and yet I still stake advantage of You I don't know where to start, where to find Your heart, sometimes I'm so lost that I don't even know how to beg for Your forgiveness You have all the answers to the questions I don't even know to ask yet...

I'm lost. Spell it out for me, tell me what to do. Where are You? I followed my own road and the grass seems so green but I'm still miserable. The directions Home must go through the Cross.
I've never been so at a loss I'm at a canyon I can't get around or cross So baby come down here, lay by my side And tell me love's not lost across the great divide
The only way through is the Cross, the desert, a complete emptying of myself. Come down here, Lord (You do, in Jesus!), walk with me. Tell me love's not lost. Tear down the curtain that separates us from You (the Holy of Holies was our great divide but You tore it the day Jesus died)

You're my destiny and destination Understand my desperation, you The only place I wanna be So get us back to you and me
You are my destiny, my home, the Being I was and am made for. You alone understand my desperation. You are the only place I want to be. Please get us back to where we were...united. In harmony. Draw me a map...

Fitting that this comes during Lent, a time when we pray the Stations of the Cross and realize that the only way to Him is through the Cross. Thank God He's given us a map, now it is up to us to follow.
