what about Now

Sometimes songs that you’ve listened to for years and never really thought about suddenly jump out at you with God in the midst of the lyrics. Today, this is that song.

Rock or Knock: Rock
Song: What About Now
Artist: Daughtry
Album: Daughtry
Lyrics:
Shadows fill an empty heart
As love is fading,
From all the things that we are
But are not saying.
Can we see beyond the stars
And make it to the dawn?

Change the colors of the sky.
And open up to
The ways you made me feel alive,
The ways I loved you.
For all the things that never died,
To make it through the night,
Love will find you.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you’re making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it’s lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it’s too late,
What about now?

The sun is breaking in your eyes
To start a new day.
This broken heart can still survive
With a touch of your grace.
Shadows fade into the light.
I am by your side,
Where love will find you.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you’re making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love, it never went away?
What if it’s lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it’s too late,
What about now?

Now that we’re here,
Now that we’ve come this far,
Just hold on.
There is nothing to fear,
For I am right beside you.
For all my life,
I am yours.

What about now?
What about today?
What if you’re making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it’s lost behind words we could never find?

What about now?
What about today?
What if you’re making me all that I was meant to be?
What if our love never went away?
What if it’s lost behind words we could never find?
Baby, before it’s too late,
Baby, before it’s too late,
Baby, before it’s too late,
What about now?

Let me just begin by saying that the fact that I missed God in these lyrics before today is a mystery. Once I hear Him in them I can hardly hear anything or anyone else in them, and I love that.

God knows that sometimes we have an empty heart, filled only by shadows, fear, pain and nothing really good or wholesome. Love, sadly, fades. Human love, that is; God’s love never fades. Our love for God often fades because of the things we are not saying. We don’t let Him have it. We think He’ll get mad at us for feeling what we feel. As if. We pretend that everything is okay with God, that our hearts aren’t breaking as if He can’t see them broken inside of us. It only does Him a disservice. When we keep things from God, our true feelings, our sins, our broken hearts, we are lying to God by omission. The question then becomes can we see beyond the stars and make it to the dawn? Can we see beyond our own masks and make it to the light of His love for us?

We have to remember the ways He’s made us feel alive. God knows the last few weeks have been incredibly trying on what I’ve been referring to as my poor little heart, but through it all I’ve had to remember and cling to the times He’s made me feel alive, the tough times He’s already brought me through and the joy He constantly restores in my heart, even if I don’t fully feel that joy yet. Through it all I’ve come to realize that there were things that never died, things I never surrendered to God that I so desperately needed to. It wasn’t until I was stripped of nearly everything else I wanted that I was finally able to see what had yet to die and what needed to be surrendered to God. The only way I’ve made it through the night is by knowing there is hope for tomorrow. I know that Love will find me and that simple truth gets me through.

Love finds me and that is great, but then the questions come in.
What about now? What about today? What if YOU are making me all that I was meant to be? What if God, through all the hurt and the pain and the struggles and joys of life is making me all that He wants me to be?
Like clay in the Potter’s Hands, mold me, O Lord!
What if our love never went away? What if I was the one hiding it away?
I hide behind my masks, O Lord, but You saw through them all. Your love never went away, restore mine for You.
What if my love for You is lost behind the words I could never find, the words I was too afraid to say?
Put those words on my lips that I may speak them and so come to love You more! Before it is too late, restore my love for You!

The sun, or perhaps the Son is breaking in Your eyes, the Son is broken on the cross out of love for me, what a wonder! This broken heart – no matter how shattered our hearts may be – can still survive and even thrive with just a touch of His grace. The shadows will fade into the Light of Your Love, for You are by our sides and You meet us where we are and shower us in Your love!

Now that we’ve come this far – and the journey, no doubt, has been long and torturous – there is nothing to fear for He is right beside us, for all of our lives He is ours. Just play that section of the song over and over again until you get it through your head! And it goes both ways – for all of our lives we are His! For all of my life, Lord, I am Yours. Eternally. Perpetually. Always and forever. There is nothing to fear with Him by our sides. If He is for us (and certainly He is, He is our Father!) then who can be against us?

Before it is too late, what about now?
Take my heart, O God, ransom it to Your heavenly throne. Pursue me. Allow me to fall passionately and deeply in love with You, my maker, my Father, my all in all. Make me all that I was meant to be.
